A Family Legacy

One man’s vision transformed an entire region forever. This man was Carlos Montez Champalimaud, the physician and entrepreneur who discovered this magnificent portion of the Portuguese coastline and who first acquired the Quinta da Marinha property back in 1922.

With rare foresight, Carlos Montez Champalimaud developed plans to stabilise the natural sand dunes and planted pine trees throughout to prepare the land for the construction of a residential estate that would go on to also become a tourist destination of exceptional quality.

The necessary permits were secured by his son, Carlos Sommer Champalimaud, in the 1950’s and 60’s, expanding the original project for the Quinta da Marinha development. Roads were built, wells were drilled for water supply, the first homes erected and sports facilities (horse racing and tennis) introduced.

In recent years, under the ownership of Miguel Champalimaud (the third generation of the family), an exceptional sporting estate has been developed, boasting one of Portugal’s leading equestrian centres, a state-of-the-art Health and Racket Club and the award-winning Oitavos Dunes golf course, as well as further residential housing, all of which have added to Quinta da Marinha’s appeal.

Most recently, The Oitavos, a luxury hotel in Portugal, was launched on 1 September 2010, projecting this family’s long-term endeavour onto a new global stage in Cascais with a luxury hotel. The Oitavos represents the culmination of the Champalimauds’ vision and philosophy for the hospitality industry.

Interestingly, this family vision and entrepreneurial spirit also extends to other fields, including wine-making. See A Family of wine producers
